Title: Backstory: NWRGeek
Post by: Nathan/elevatorsonly on June 17, 2012, 07:55:20
The NWRGeek channel instantaneously spawned from elevatorsonly on November 17, 2011, the same date that I started the StopEASCommunityHate channel (designed to - well - stop EAS community spammers.) The whole business of its videos started on March 13, 2011. I was typing a post for the Skyscraper Simulator Forum as a daylight savings reminder, when my Midland WR-100 went off for a double header flood warning. Since my Flip was on a tripod I was like "why not film it?". I uploaded it to Youtube on elevatorsonly a few hours later. On March 20, 2012, I gave that radio to my uncle living in Illinois and ordered a Midland WR-120, the WR-100's successor. The WR-120 arrived on March 23, 2011. I had gone to Orlando, Florida on March 31, 2011, right before the National Weather Service (NWS) broadcast a Winter Storm Warning EAS, which I missed. When I got to Orlando, I had its county code setup. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC), division of the NWS, had issued a Tornado Watch, which I missed because of the hotel check-in time. No warnings were issued for Orlando. On June 1, 2011, we got a million alerts, including tornado warnings. On August 24, 2011, I purchased the RadioShack 12-522 handheld radio to counterpart the WR-120. The WR-120's antenna snapped off, but it was repaired the next month. On August 27 to September 1, we got several alerts associated with Hurricane Irene, my largest stretch of alerts. Most of them were flood warnings. The most alerts came on August 28, my birthday, including a quadruple header (4 straight). August 31 and September 1's alerts were not associated with Irene. On October 22, 2011, I purchased another Midland WR-100, and a few days later, a freak winter storm blew through. Most of the homes for like 20 miles+ lost power and cable, but my street only lost cable services. My great-grandmother in Methuen got lucky and had both. I got several Winter Storm Warnings, including one with the old NOAA Weather Radio voice. On November 17, 2011, I actually made the NWRGeek account. I have EAS #1-113 on both NWRGeek and elevatorsonly, but #114 onward are only on NWRGeek. On December 25, 2011, I got the RadioShack 12-521 weather radio. In May 2012, my WR-120's antenna (once again) COMPLETELY snapped, and the 12-521 menu functions stopped working, but the radio itself still works. Perhaps my biggest event, on May 29, 2012, I got MANY alerts, including 3 tornado warnings. Those videos are still being uploaded.
